To understand more about Link to Microsoft Fabric and how it compares to Azure Synapse Link have a read of the Microsoft information – https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-apps/maker/data-platform/azure-synapse-link-view-in-fabric

Link to Microsoft Fabric vs. Azure Synapse Link

To get your D365 F&O data into Microsoft Fabric there are currently two powerful integration options:

  •  Azure Synapse Link for Azure Users
Ideal for organisations already invested in Azure. This method provides near real-time data replication from D365 F&O to Synapse Analytics, enabling advanced reporting and AI-driven insights.
  •  Link to Microsoft Fabric
The newest Microsoft technology that connects your ERP data directly to Microsoft Fabric. Link to Microsoft Fabric simplifies data movement, reduces complexity, accelerates ROI, and faster business integration.

Our team will assess your environment, budget, and project, then recommend the best approach to meet your business goals.

 Deliverables (10–30 Days)

Our D365 F&O Accelerator quick-start approach ensures you receive:

Frequently Asked Questions

Datahub understand that organisation may want to use and test a solution before a large implementation. For this reason we have created accelerators that allow the organisation to use and work with the technology on a small amount of their data. For example the the orders and invoices for the current year. The accelerator will allow for the integration of Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (F&O) data into Microsoft Fabric within 10–30 days.

Initially the deliverables, access, and data will be discussed in a workshop. The duration of the quick start will be between 10-30 days depending on the deliverables.

No. We offer Azure Synapse Link for Azure users and Link to Microsoft Fabric for those leveraging Microsoft Fabric without Azure.

  • With Azure Synapse Link selected F&O tables are ingested into Azure ADLS Gen 2 storage where it will be in delta / parquet files. From the ADLS storage MS Fabric shortcuts are created to make the F&O data available in fabric for analysis and data modeling.
  • With Link to Microsoft Fabric the data is not ingested into Azure. The delta / parquet files reside on the DataVerse and Link to Microsoft Fabric automatically creates the shortcuts.

In both solutions the data does not create copies of the data in Fabric so ensuring that no additional storage costs are incurred.

If you want to understand more about storage and compute costs with each option then please get in touch and arrange a call with our team.

Yes, there are differences. Azure Synapse Link typically incurs costs related to Azure Synapse Analytics usage, including compute and storage for dedicated or serverless pools.

With Link to Microsoft Fabric the compute will be within the Fabric Capacity Units (CU) and the storage costs will be based on the DataVerse storage allocated. Please not that exceeding the limits can incur additional cost. Please see DataVerse cost question below.

Both solutions are designed to minimize custom development. Azure Synapse Link requires some configuration and may involve additional setup for pipelines or transformations in Synapse.

Link to Microsoft Fabric is more streamlined, as it automatically creates a Lakehouse and integrates with Fabric services, reducing development overhead. However, custom analytics or transformations in Fabric may still require some development effort.

Shortcuts

With Azure Synapse Link shortcuts are not created automatically, you will need to create a PySpark notebook that will create shortcuts for any new tables in the Azure ADLS GEN 2 storage. This notebook then needs to be included in any ETL pipeline.

With Link to Microsoft Fabric the shortcuts are created automatically. Removing this additional task making the process more efficient.

Within DataVerse there are three types of storage:

  • Database
  • Files
  • Logs

With the Link to Microsoft Fabric the delta tables are stored in the files section of DataVerse, not the Database section

Dataverse storage costs are license based. Each licence will include a default capacity approx.

  • 20gb of Database storage
  • 20gb of File storage

If these limits are exceeded, then over usage costs will apply of approx.

  • $40 per gb per month for database
  • $2 per gb per month for file storage

Please note that storage costs can change and the information above is accurate on the date of publishing. For this reason, always refer to the Microsoft information regarding costs.

You can’t see D365 F&O tables in Power BI using the Dataverse connector because F&O tables are not actual stored tables. DataVerse exposes either virtual tables or delta tables in neither DataVerse managed storage, neither of which the Power BI DataVerse connector can read.

Recommended method to utilise F&O data in Power BI models:

  • Create a Link to Microsoft Fabric enabling DataVerse entities to be available in MS Fabric. This will create delta tables in the DataVerse storage and a lakehouse in MS Fabric Onelake.
  • In Power BI connect to Fabric lakehouse using direct lake mode
  • Select the F&O tables you require in the lakehouse and create a centralised semantic model.
  • From the model create multiple reports to support the business needs.

Datahub can support with all of the above steps and have you up and running with reports based on F&O data within a few weeks.

Microsoft has not officially announced retirement for Synapse Link. However, Fabric is the strategic direction for Microsoft’s analytics platform, and new features are being prioritized for Fabric. Organisations should consider adopting Link to Microsoft Fabric for future-proofing their analytics architecture.

Licences that you will require:

  • If you are looking at Link to Microsoft Fabric then there would be an assumption that you already have D365 ERP and DataVerse licences in place.
  • Microsoft Fabric capacity license is also required.
  • If you have a Fabric capacity < F64 then users will also need a Power BI Pro licence. If you have an F64 or above capacity, then users will not require a Power BI pro licence.

Link to Microsoft Fabric supports near real-time data ingestion using delta updates from Dataverse. While it’s not streaming (true real time data), updates are frequent enough for most operational analytics scenarios.

You can build advanced dashboards in Power BI, run data engineering pipelines, apply machine learning models, and integrate with other Fabric experiences like Data Science and Real-Time Analytics.
